The Kunming Museum of Contemporary Art is presenting a solo exhibition by French artist Claude Viallat, a pioneer of the ‘Supports/Surfaces’ artistic movement that emerged in France in the 1960s.

This movement began with a theoretical reflection on painting, and then embarked on an approach that gave equal importance to materials, creative gestures and the final work, taking the frame, the canvas and the very making of the painting as its fundamental material. Claude Viallat carried the idea of ‘disinspiration’ throughout his creative career, using a variety of ready-made and available fabrics as ‘supports’ to create serial works with similar motifs.
